Frequently asked questions

Everything about accounts, scoring, permit tests and practising for the California road test.

Is Drive 3D School DMV approved?

No. Drive 3D School is practice and test preparation only. It is not DMV-approved driver education and it does not issue DMV Form DL 400C (driver education) or DL 400D (driver training) certificates.

Every rule we teach is quoted from the official California Driver's Handbook, so what you practise matches what the DMV tests, but completing our lessons does not replace any DMV requirement.

Do I need to download an app?

No. Drive 3D School runs entirely in your browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is nothing to download.

If you want it on your home screen, use your browser's 'Add to Home Screen' or 'Install' option and it will open like an app.

How do I create an account?

Tap 'Start free' or 'Create Parent Account' anywhere on the site and choose Parent or Learner. Each learner needs a separate account so their own scores and progress are saved.

An account works on one device at a time. Signing in on a second device signs the first one out.

What does it cost?

Practising the scored 3D drives, handbook lessons, permit practice tests and the behind-the-wheel test guide is free.

Course plans, schedules and pricing are still being finalised. See the course plan page for the current status.

How are the 3D drives scored?

Each drive is graded against an examiner checklist, exactly like the California behind-the-wheel driving test. There are 14 scenarios covering stops, turns, lane changes, parking and more.

Every check on the list quotes the official California Driver's Handbook word for word, with the page number, so you can always read the rule behind a missed point.

Are the permit practice tests like the real permit test?

They follow the same style: multiple-choice questions about rules, signs and safe driving, with a passing standard similar to the real DMV knowledge test.

There are four full 36-question versions drawn from a shared question pool, and every option, right or wrong, comes with an explanation of why it is correct or incorrect, plus a handbook citation.

Do the lessons help with real driving practice at home?

Yes. The behind-the-wheel test guide includes a printable practice sheet with checks and a plan for supervised drives, so a parent or other adult can run a mock test with the learner in a real car.

Remember: a learner must always be supervised by a licensed driver who is 25 years or older.

What is the 'Ask DMV' chat?

It is an AI study assistant that answers questions about California driving rules using the Driver's Handbook. It is available on every page, and signed-in users can keep and revisit their conversations.

It is not the real DMV and cannot look at your DMV record, book a test, or answer questions about your personal case. For official business, contact the DMV directly.

I spotted a mistake or something is not working. Who do I contact?

We want to hear about it. Reach us through our partner site:
