California permit to road test

Practice the observations examiners actually score.

Most first-time road test failures come from missed observations, not from bad steering. Drive scored California road-test scenarios in your browser, then read exactly which rule you missed and what the safer choice was.

Practice and test preparation only. This is not DMV-approved driver education and does not issue DMV Form DL 400C (Driver Education) or DL 400D (Behind-the-Wheel) certificates.

Low-poly suburban four-way stop with a car at the limit line and a pedestrian crossing

14 scenarios, scored like the real test

Every drive is graded against an explicit examiner checklist. Critical errors, like rolling a stop or passing a flashing school bus, mean the run is not a pass, exactly like the real test.

  • The four-way stop

Signal, stop behind the line, scan both ways, yield in the right order, then turn right.

  • Unprotected left turn

Turn left on a solid green light, waiting in the intersection for a safe gap in oncoming traffic.

  • Right turn across a bike lane

Signal, check your right blind spot, and let the bicyclist pass before turning right.

  • School zone crossing

Slow to 25 mph in a school zone, stop for the crossing guard, and wait until the road is clear.

  • Mid-block crosswalk

A van stops at a marked crosswalk beside you. Stop too, scan past it, and let the pedestrian finish crossing.

  • Freeway lane change

Move left around a slow truck at freeway speed: signal for 5 seconds, check the blind spot, wait for a gap.

  • Pull over and park at the curb

Signal, check your right blind spot, and park within 18 inches of the curb, clear of the hydrant.

  • Parallel parking

Reverse into a space between two parked cars, looking back the whole time, within 18 inches of the curb.

  • Parking downhill

Park facing downhill at the curb and turn your wheels toward the curb before setting the brake.

  • Parking uphill

Park facing uphill, turn your wheels away from the curb, and let the car roll back to rest against it.

  • Three-point turn

Turn around on a narrow street in three moves without touching either curb, looking back while reversing.

  • Stopped school bus

A school bus on the other side of the road flashes its red lights. Stop and stay stopped until the lights go off.

  • Railroad crossing

Slow to 15 mph, look both ways, stop at least 15 feet back when the lights flash, and wait for the train.

  • Following the examiner's directions

Drive a short test route, following spoken directions: a left turn, a right turn, then pull over.
